THE Liberals captured the 'safe' Conservative seat of Berwick-upon-Tweed today after a recount. They seized the seat, vacated by Lord Lambton over the call girl affair, with a tiny 57 majority. The winner was Mr Alan Beith, a 30-years-old lecturer in politics.

WITH the arrival of sharp frosts, people have been looking to their fuel supply for the winter. This morning, prams and trucks of all descriptions were being used by men and women to collect coke, extra to the fuel ration, from Bolton Gas Works. Each Tuesday, queues form outside the works, often before they are open, to obtain tickets for the coke. Each person is allowed to purchase 11d (4p) worth, but only a limited quantity is available. 125 YEARS AGO

November 10, 1873
AT the County Sessions on Monday, a man named William Butterworth, of no residence, was charged with having refused to perform a task of work at the Workhouse. Mr William Pilling, task-master at the Workhouse, said the prisoner refused to pick oakum or break stones. Committed to prison for 14 days. Another man named James Thompson was also sent to prison for 15 days for refusing to pick a pound of oakum. Mr Pilling said both men came into the vagrant wards together, and had evidently made it up between them not to work.
