A STITCH in time could save Gudni Bergsson from the frustrations of his lingering groin problem.

The Bolton skipper goes into hospital on Monday for a minor exploratory operation.

"We think there may be a stitch that has been left in from a previous operation that has been causing the discomfort," Wanderers boss Colin Todd revealed.

"It's only a minor exploratory operation and he'll probably only be out of action for the Ipswich game next week."

Bergsson will be the second senior Bolton player to go under the surgeon's knife in the space of a week.

Keith Branagan is recovering from an operation to clear a groin problem and could be on the sidelines for at least another couple of months.

Jussi Jaaskelainen has returned to the No 1 spot and at the moment he has no senior cover, despite Gavin Ward being back in the Reebok fold after completing a maximum three-month loan stint at Burnley.

Ward, who was thought to be lined up for a permanent transfer to Turf Moor, also has a groin problem but Todd has dismissed suggestions that he too may need an operation.
