Pupils bring cheer to old and needy CHRISTMAS presents galore were presented to the old and needy in Deane this week at a special party organised at the Lilian Hamer House. Youngsters from The Deane School, New York, have been collecting goodies to fill shoe boxes to give to people who don't get many Christmas presents themselves.

And at a specially organised presentation at the community centre on Deane Road, they all played Santa, handing over their offerings.

The Year Seven pupils have been collecting non-perishable items since the start of term in September under the watchful eye of head of year Sue Rothwell.

She said: "This has been their charity event for this year. All the pupils have been very enthusiastic about collecting and they have been thoughtful too - only getting small tins because most older people only cook for one. They have even given up their breaks and lunch-times to sort the boxes out.

Sixty boxes were taken to Lilian Hamer House for staff there to distribute throughout the area and another 20 have also been distributed.

Mrs Rothwell added: "I'm very pleased with the pupils. They have all done themselves proud helping the old and needy people who deserve it most."
