SECURITY is being stepped up in Radcliffe town centre in response to public concern about safety on the streets.
Bury Council is seeking tenders for the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV).
Consultations have been held with the police as to where the cameras will be located to offer the maximum protection.
It is hoped the cameras will help reduce crime and attract more people into the town.
The chairman of Radcliffe Renewal Advisory Committee, Cllr Barry Briggs, said: "This is just the latest move to make Radcliffe town centre more user friendly. People have talked to us about the need for feeling safe on the streets and CCTV cameras are tried and tested."
The planned scheme mirrors a similar initiative introduced in Bury earlier this year. A total of 74 CCTV cameras were installed in and around the town centre in January as part of a £440,000 project.
The town was awarded an £80,000 Home Office grant and it is expected that the Radcliffe scheme will receive similar funding.
