FOLLOWING complaints from residents, an order barring drivers from using the junction of Foster Lane and Dovedale Road in Breightmet has been overturned.

Councillors on Bolton's highways sub-committee have also asked for a report on traffic problems experienced by drivers at the junction of Red Lane and Foster Lane.

The proposal to ban driving was first advertised in 1994. Apart from two objections, all the other residents along Foster Lane supported the move.

The order came into operation in February last year and the road was closed by a kerb and footway along Dovedale Road and the installation of bollards.

Following the closure the council received a petition from residents in Marlow Close, who complained about the limited visibility for vehicles emerging from Foster Lane into Red Lane and the problems associated with driving into Foster Lane from Red Lane during the winter.

They also complained about road safety at the junction and access for emergency services and said they had not been consulted about the closure.

The residents' campaign got the backing of Bolton North East MP David Crausby.

Due to the level of criticism, the council issued a questionnaire to residents of Marlow Close and Foster Lane.

Of these, 26 were returned and all 16 residents of Marlow Close were against keeping the bollards.

The sub-committee's decision to revoke the order and remove the bollards on Dovedale Road will now be advertised and a review will be undertaken of the problems associated with the junction of Red Lane and Foster Lane.
