A Westhoughton councillor is urging "every man, woman and child" in the town to oppose a massive super estate plan.

Cllr David Chadwick who represents Westhoughton on Bolton Council is asking people to "stand up and be counted."

He is asking residents to write to Bolton's environment director Mr Ray Jefferson asking for the site of the 1,100-home housing estate plan to be taken off a vital planning document.

The land at Lee Hall, Westhoughton, has been designated for housing and industrial use of Bolton's unitary development plan.

But there has been outrage since an application was sent in to Bolton Council last month for the development.

Westhoughton Town Council is also calling at a meeting on Monday for it to be taken out of the UDP.

Cllr Chadwick, who represents Westhoughton on Bolton Council is calling on residents to make sure that they make their feelings known.

And he says that it is not too late for the UDP, which is a planning blueprint for the whole of Bolton, to be changed.

The site being designated for housing use makes it harder for Bolton Council to turn down the application and it could weaken its case at public inquiry.

Cllr Chadwick said: "I have spoken to a considerable number of local people since this development was announced and they all feel that enough is enough.

"I would urge residents to stand up and be counted and let the planning department know that we do not want to see further erosion of our open spaces.

"The time is not too late to make changes, we can still influence the UDP. If enough people take advantage of this opportunity, it could act as a catalyst for change.

"I would, therefore, urge every man, woman and child to write to the Director and tell him that they wish to retain the existing open spaces and not have more and more houses.

"Do this for the sake of our children who may not have any open spaces left in 30 years time."
