PETER Sloan is not a captain of industry - but he is planning to create scores of new "jobs" in the Bolton area. Peter is the new co-ordinator of the Bolton Volunteer Bureau, bringing together local people and the many groups which rely on their support. Born in Yorkshire and a policeman for 30 years including 10 in Bolton, Peter lives in Westhoughton and has a long history of involvement with community groups.
Rewards
"Bolton is a particularly volunteer-orientated town," he explained. "People here are very caring and willing to work voluntarily, and there are dozens of groups with which they can be involved."
The rewards for them - apart from the satisfaction of helping others - include opportunities for learning new skills, boosting job prospects, and offering career changes.
"There really is something available for every age-group," he added. "And often, people don't realise just what groups would be glad of their help, right on their own doorstep."
Peter is looking forward to meeting more people who would like to do voluntary work, and from local organisations who are not already registered with the Bureau.
The Volunteer Bureau is based in Bridge House on Pool Street in the town centre, tel. 01204-380692.
