COLIN Todd has warned Jon Newsome not to let the rumour mongers give him false hope of a move to the Reebok. The Wanderers boss is disturbed that speculation originating in Yorkshire suggests the deal to bring the Sheffield Wednesday defender to Bolton could be back on.

"It's is not fair on Jon for this sort of stuff to still be going on," Todd argued. "Nothing has changed and as far as I am concerned the deal is dead because the clubs' transfer valuations haven't changed.

"Nothing has come from us and the only way it could be revived is if Sheffield came down to our valuation.

"Even then there would still have to be a lot to do before anything happened. For the boy's own peace of mind, he needs to know that we won't be pursuing a deal." Newsome, who made six impressive appearances during a month on loan with Wanderers, sounded hopeful of a permanent move when he said: "I just hope the clubs can make some progress in the next few days."

And Owls boss Danny Wilson seemed to have fuelled those hopes when he suggested the gulf between Wanderers' offer and his near-£2 million asking price could be breached.

He said: "There is obviously a compromise figure there somewhere."
