SLIMMERS have weighed in with a huge boost for cancer patients after they shed thousands of pounds. Up to 100 Weight Watchers from Atherton joined forces with others from Stretford to raise £605 for Manchester's Christie Hospital cancer centre. The cash was collected during seven meetings held during the year, with slimmers chipping in 5p a session and running raffles and bring-and-buy sales in support of the hospital.
The idea to fundraise for Christie's came from group leader Lynda Nicholson, who saw her members pull in the pounds for charity as they lost 13,459 lbs between them!
Lynda said: "In both Atherton and Stretford we have a few members who have had breast or other cancers. I suggested we do something to help Christie's and they have responded magnificently."
The Atherton group gathered at the Atherton Arms pub where a cheque was handed over to Christie's regional appeal officer Paul Bailey and as a reward for their double success they treated themselves to spaghetti bolognaise and a celebratory cream cake!
