A NEW town centre manager has been appointed to promote Bolton as one the region's top shopping centres.
Bury-born mother-of-three Karen Wheeldon will take over from Maria Appleton in the role which involves co-ordinating business and civic opportunities.
Karen has left a similar position in Colchester and has skills in accountancy, administration and general management.
She said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge of sustaining and developing an already strong and vibrant town centre in the face of growing competition from neighbouring and out-of-town centres.
"It's an exciting time for Bolton with a lot going on and lots to do."
Rod Neasham, chairman of the Town Centre Partnership, said: "Karen has an excellent track record and with the enthusiasm and range of ideas she presented at interview, I look forward to her making a positive impact on the town and in helping drive forward the work of the partnership."
Leader of the Council, Cllr Bob Howarth, said that Karen's appointment meant Bolton was well placed to meet the "challenges of a new Millennium."
