TODAY marks the first anniversary of the closure of The Bolton Cannon Cinema (ex Lido).
While The Warner Bros and Virgin Multiplexes have their charms, surely I'm not alone in missing the Cannon's intimacy and accessibility?
Regrettably, a year on in the heart of town, one is faced with a derelict site and no guarantee of when the situation will improve. (Readers may be aware of the site on the junction of Manchester Road and Bridgeman Place that has lain empty for over 10 years.)
Are we perhaps a tad too generous to our property developers?
May I suggest the following modest reform - owners would be given a year actively to develop an empty site. If no action were forthcoming, the local council would be empowered to table an alternative (reasonable) bid that would guarantee immediate action.
I'm sure this would work wonders in making our town centre even more attractive!
