FORMER Wanderers hero John McGinlay made a moving presentation to the Special Care Baby Unit at the Royal Bolton Hospital, in memory of a baby who tragically died at just 13 weeks old.
John, now with Oldham Athletic, presented a selection of of knitwear knitted by helpers and cuddly toys on behalf of the Foundation for Sudden Infant Deaths.
The award was made to thank the unit for the care they gave Atherton baby Ellise Martin, who was born six weeks premature.
After her sad death just over two years ago, parents Nicola and Brian organised a series of charity events to help the foundation. Volunteers also began knitting and collecting toys for the baby care unit.
Ellise's grandmother, Linda Myers, said: "The staff at the special baby care unit were wonderful. Although Ellise's death was very sad at least the unit helped her to have the very brief life she did."
She added: "One thing we found was that you just couldn't get clothes small enough for the premature babies. That's why we decided to get the small ones specially made."
The foundation, a registered charity, funds research into cot death, as well as support and information and runs a 24-hour helpline. The foundation can be contacted on 0171 235 1721
