THE KITCHEN at the Royal Bolton Hospital faces a three month shutdown for major repairs - just three years after opening. Repair work to the floor - and the cost of alternative catering - is expected to land health chiefs with a bill for £185,000.
They are now taking legal advice over the state of the kitchen floor which has developed surface faults.
Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust say repair work will start in March. It will mean the temporary closure of the kitchen, built as part of the new £45 million Royal Bolton development. It will also mean a reduced catering service.
Airline trays
Patients will be offered a limited choice of "brought in" meals and most will be served on airline style trays, rather than the usual crockery. The restaurant and fast food bar will stay open, but with a reduced service.
Mrs Beverley Andrew, director of operations with Bolton Hospitals NHS Trust, said there was no other choice than to temporarily shut the kitchen.
She said: "The catering service based at the Royal Bolton Hospital has built an enviable reputation for good hospital food, so it it very disappointing that we are having to suspend our usual service for a while. We apologise to all for any inconvenience, but can reassure people that all dietary considerations will still be made."
It is expected that the kitchen will close for eight to 12 weeks. The £185,000 bill includes repair work and the temporary catering arrangements.
