NEW technology with all its advantages is bound to have a down-side. And, as many parents already know, this is in the form of the large amount of computer porn available on the Internet.
So, the responsible attitude of teachers at Hayward School in Bolton in using an American system to block pupils' access to such material is to be welcomed.
All too often, youngsters are allowed free reign where computers are concerned, and school is the last place where you want the potential for learning which they offer to be sullied by filth.
The system used by Hayward School not only blocks access to porn but also checks electronic mail - which stops youngsters sending "mucky messages" to each other - and allows schools to build up a list of clean and relevant web sites that to aid lessons.
It will certainly be a relief to parents to know that, in school at least, Big Brother is watching over their children - and switching off any naughty bits.
