FORMER Horwich town councillor and breast cancer research campaigner Dylis Barry has died.
Mrs Barry, aged 60, became a leading figure in national campaigns to raise cash for research into breast cancer.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer just days after being elected onto the town council in May 1991.
Hospice
She served as a Conservative councillor until 1995.
After a masectomy she dedicated her time to raising cash for breast cancer charities and raising awareness of the disease which kills 1,000 people every month.
Mrs Barry died peacefully in her sleep at Bolton Hospice on Tuesday.
She was instrumental in the formation of Breakthrough, the UK's first dedicated breast cancer research centre.
Only last October she appeared in the BEN after a glamorous make-over to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Then she told the BEN she had been diagnosed with a secondary spread of cancer and was receiving treatment again.
Mrs Barry, of Buckingham Avenue, Horwich, worked as a special needs teacher.
A service and committal will be held at Overdale on Monday.
She leaves her husband John and children Jonathon and Davina.
Her family have requested that any donations be made to Action Against Breast Cancer or Bolton Hospice.
