SHOPPING giant Littlewoods wants to build a huge security fence around a mill which they plan to shut.
An application for a 2.4 metre fence at Holden Mill, Blackburn Road, was put before Bolton's planning control sub committee.
But councillors were unhappy at the design and position of the fence fronting on to Blackburn Road.
They deferred a decision for council officers to go back for talks with Littlewoods.
Closure
The firm announced last week that it was one of two mills to shut with the loss of 378 jobs. Another 200 Littlewoods jobs will also go with the closure of its Blackrod depot.
The planning application was lodged with Bolton Council weeks before the closures were announced.
A report to councillors said that it was needed for "security purpose" around the mill, which is a grade two listed building.
Bromley Cross Tory Cllr Donald Carr said: "With the building now closed down, it is important that the fence is put up to protect one of the finest mills in the area from vandalism."
