Wanderers youth team crashed out of the FA Youth Cup at the fourth round stage with a 4-0 defeat at the New Den last night. It could have been so different for the Wanderers if they had capitalised on their early chances when they were dominating the game.
In the 12th minute Millwall keeper Richard Barnard made a tremendous save from a Kieron O'Connor piledriver, and four minutes later he denied Kevin Nolan. Unfortunately for Nolan he hit the rebound, which fell to him in front of an open goal, high into the stand.
In the 18th minute, it was Gordon Smith's turn to be frustrated. He beat three defenders before homing in on goal, but Barnard blocked his effort on the line. Millwall's first chance came in the 20th minute when Tommy Tyne broke through. Wanderers keeper James Evans got down to make a tremendous save, but from then on it all started to go wrong for Bolton.
In the 31st minute Jason Fermie was on hand to slip the ball into the net from a twice taken fallen free kick for Millwall, and Tyne increased their lead with a spectacular shot on the stroke of half time. Tyne killed off any hopes of a comeback five minutes into the second half when he capitalised on some defensive hesitancy. The home keeper was never troubled by the Wanderers, and Byron Bubb wrapped things up with Millwall's fourth in injury time.
Team: Evans, Bell (Flanagan), O'Malley, O'Connor, Buchanan, Nolan, Buggie, Stephan, Smith, ( Tagoe) Snorrason, Laidlaw (Downey).
