PETER Morrison conjured up two moments of magic at the Reebok last night to prove there is still a place in football for the good, old-fashioned winger. The confident young wide boy pounced at the double, starting with a stunner and finishing with a flourish to earn Wanderers their first Pontins League win in nine games and end a run that had produced just three points since early October. He put Wanderers in front after just eight minutes with a crisp, unstoppable left-foot volley from a cross by trialist full-back Paul Heckingbottom then sealed victory with a superb solo effort three minutes from time after the Owls had threatened to take a share of the spoils.

It took a couple of smart saves by Birkir Kristinsson from Scott Oakes and Junior Agogo to keep Wanderers in front as Wednesday, second best in the first half, pressed hard for an equaliser. Heckingbottom, once on Manchester United's books and now with Sunderland, joined United States international Michael Burns as the latest hopefuls in the trial stakes in a game which marked the return to competitive action of Andy Todd and Costas Xiourouppa after long injury lay-offs.

Encouragingly, Todd Jnr showed no ill effects or reaction after his double hernia operation and, although still some way short of a first team return, completed the 90 minutes to suggest he is determined to make up for lost time. His pass in the 71st minute invited Eidur Gudjohnsen to show his power and skill and the young Icelander didn't disappoint, chesting the ball down, losing his marker and looking set to put a gloss finish on a stunning move, only for Stuart Jones to match the quality of the attack with an impressive save.

But the Wednesday keeper was helpless when Morrison cut in from the left, slipped tackles and darted into the box, where he finished in style.

Wanderers: Kristinsson, Burns, Heckingbottom, Holden, Todd, Strong, Corrigan, Staton, Gudjohnsen, Xiourouppa, Morrison.
