AS the price of petrol rocketed today by a staggering 8p a gallon, the RAC claimed the motorist could have been cushioned against the rise by an equivalent reduction in fuel tax. The new prices are, per gallon: Five star, 51p; four star, 50p; three star, 49p; two star, 48p. Paraffin, up by 7p, will cost between 27 and 28p a gallon, and a gallon of diesel fuel between 49p and 50p.

SIR,- The Deputy Bolton Coroner is reported to have said at a recent inquest: 'No blame can be attached to anyone if a passenger on a bus gets up whilst the bus is in motion, and after making his way to the platform, meets misfortune there.'

This has amazed me! My experience has been that, unless you do that very thing, the bus nine times out of ten will be on its way to the next stop. One must clamber along the swaying and jolting gangway to be ready to hop off.

Elderly people receive very little consideration from some conductors and come in for abuse for not moving quickly enough. - Yours, etc., GSR, Astley Bridge.

125 YEARS AGO

ON Wednesday evening a dramatic entertainment by members of Bolton Dramatic Society, assisted by professional ladies, was given in the Temperance Hall for the benefit of the Infirmary and Dispensary. There was a moderately good attendance, the reserved seats being teo-thirds filled by a fashionable assembly.

AN Egyptian army has invaded Darfur, a small negro territory on the south-west frontier of Egypt. The people of Darfur had sent to the assistance of disaffected bands on the river Gazale an army of 10,000 men, whom the Egyptians defeated and dispersed.
