ACCORDING to a recent article in the BEN, the Conservatives are to launch a Battle for Britain campaign.

One might be forgiven for thinking that they had actually seen the light and started to back the Government's constitutional programme. However, upon further reading it turns out that they are up to their old ways again. It is actually the democratic reforms themselves that their spokesman Paul Brierley refers to as "vandalism''.

For example they claim that the forthcoming reform of parliament is "ill-conceived". The fact is that the House of Lords' aristocratic rule will be replaced by democracy because that is what a modern forward looking country embraces.

They called the referendum decisions on devolution as a "headlong rush". The Scottish and Welsh people have voted for devolved parliament working within the UK, because that is what they believe in and that is what they want.

For the record, only the Conservatives wish to retain the unelected and unaccountable House of Lords, and only the Conservatives campaigned against the wishes of the Scottish and Welsh people.
