A PIONEERING service to help the victims of racial harassment in Bolton was launched today. Organised by Bolton Racial Equality Council, the Bolton Racial Harassment Project has been set up to offer support to victims and demonstrate the commitment to tackling racial harassment in Bolton.
The project has been given funding for three years by the National Lotteries Charities Board. BREC has appointed a racial harassment officer who has already dealt with 31 incidents since September.
The officer's key tasks are to provide support to victims and monitor action taken. They will also try to increase the confidence of communities to come forward and report incidents.
Greater Manchester Police, Bolton Council and Victim Support are also heavily involved in the scheme. The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Peter Finch, Bolton Council chairman of housing, Cllr Noel Spencer, and Chief Supt Mel Pelham of Greater Manchester Police were at today's launch at the Friends Meeting House.
