A WRECKED piece of land is to be given a new lease of life thanks to North West Water.

Derelict Denham Quarry (pictured) at Brindle was ruined by illegal motorcycle riding but is now to be transformed into a community recreational area.

Thanks to the support of North West Water's LandCare initiative, work is due to start in March to turn the site into a centrepiece for outdoor leisure activities.

Groundwork Chorley and Wigan have also stepped in to help with the project.

The £22,000 rejuvenation scheme will see Groundwork working closely with Chorley Borough Council and Brindle Parish Council.

Julie Maund, from Groundwork Chorley and Wigan, said: "We are planning to develop the area in and around the old sand quarry into a community recreation area that will offer visitors a place to walk, picnic and, for the more energetic, rock climb.

"The intention is to carry out landscaping work and a footpath network will also be created."

She added: "At the end of the day the project will reclaim Denham Quarry for community use and create an enhanced public amenity which will encourage its use and an appreciation of the environment."

Phil Brand from North West Water, said: "LandCare was launched last year and resulted in £170,000 being distributed to support a range of schemes.

"This year, in partnership with organisations like Groundwork, we are anticipating spending more than £200,000. These projects can make a real difference and the funding is helping to solve some very old problems in new ways."

He added: "LandCare has been welcomed right across the North West and those who may be interested in applying for financial support in the next round of funding should write to their local Groundwork organisation."
