THE early deaths of his parents prompted a local businessman to take to the fund-raising trail.
Derek Robertson, owner of IP Gill Estate Agents in Swinton, is turning back the clock 30 years to raise cash for the Heart Research North-west appeal.
Both of Derek's parents died from heart disease in their early 50s and it is their untimely deaths which have prompted him into action.
Derek and his colleagues have organised a 60s night at Clifton Cricket Club tonight which has already raised £1,000 in ticket sales for the Heart Research Fund.
The fund has been set up to raise £120,000 for research projects at the leading edge of science and technology.
All are heart-related and under the remit of cardiothoracic surgeon Tim Hooper and cardiologist Dr Simon Ray and their colleagues at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester.
Derek said: "Obviously my own parents' deaths have played their part in prompting my fund-raising but this is a wonderful charity and the work done at Wythenshawe has benefited hundreds across the whole of the Northwest."
Tickets for Derek's 60s night sold out within hours of going on sale. Asda superstore donated the meat and potatoes for the hot pot supper and the band, The Sharoons, gave their services to the event.
Anyone interested in donating cash to Heart Research North-west Appeal should make their cheques payable to "Heart Research" and send them to Derek's offices at 115, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester, M27 4AA. Derek turns
