I REFER to the BEN (February 12). It is indeed wonderful to see the youth of Bolton coming together
and displaying its musical talent.
However one aspect concerns me as a parent of a "musical child" who attended the Junior Orchestra then "graduated" to the Junior Youth Orchestra over a number of years.
The decision of the education service to relocate the music Centre to Deane Base Schools last year from its former location of Bolton College, Manchester Road, had a disastrous effect on my daughter's musical
career.
As a shift worker (inclusive of weekends) it became apparent very quickly that to get a young girl to the regular Saturday morning rehearsal at a location that was not on a bus route, and badly located was becoming difficult.
Despite our best intentions, rehearsals were missed, and eventually, because of the difficulties incurred, interest was lost.
Attendance became subject to my shift availability, and with no parents living on this side of town to come to a mutual travel arrangement with, the bubble burst.
My daughter still maintains her interest in music but not with the aid of Bolton Metro Borough.
I advise any parent to send their child to Bolton Music Centre, that is providing of course you have a car to take them, and are fortunate enough to work regular days with weekends off.
For those who do not meet this criteria alas, you are sadly excluded from the benefit of this service.
