Wanderers Res 0 Grimsby Res 1 A goal after just four minutes put paid to Wanderers' hopes of recording their third successive Pontins League win.
Bottom club Grimsby took the honours at the Reebok last night after Brazilian midfielder Jose Antunes made a sensational scoring start to his first trial game.
The early goal and the lack of experience after Danish trailist Tommy Schramm limped off in the 16th minute were handicaps the young Bolton side simply couldn't overcome. Schramm had hoped to turn in an influential performance that might have won him a contract offer, having impressed Colin Todd in last week's 2nd Xl win at West Brom. But the 27-year-old from Herfolge left the field dejected after picking up a groin strain in the opening minutes.
The 37th minute withdrawal of Bo Hansen and Eidur Gudjohnsen - Todd's understudy strikers at first team level - further weakened the potency of the Bolton attack but opened the door for a second trialist.
Young Swedish striker Tobias Grahn, who played against Wanderers for Middlesbrough Reserves in December, struggled to make an impression though with the few opportunities created falling to others. The only first half threat to the Grimsby goal was a Dean Holden header, which flashed narrowly wide, and although things improved in the second period when Mariners' impressive Nigerian keeper Ademold Vancole - another trialist - made good saves to deny Costas Xiourouppa and Noel Corrigan, the more experienced visitors still had the better scoring chances.
Lee Aschroft hit the bar 15 minutes from time and, in the closing minutes, Antunes missed a golden opportunity to snatch a second goal.
Wanderers: Kristinsson, Dawson, Pryers, Schramm (Doherty), Holden, Strong, Corrigan, Staton, Gudjohnsen (Xiourouppa), Hansen (Grahn), Morrison.
