BOLTON town hall chiefs have given local sporting clubs and other organisations a transfer into a "free rates league".
Up to now, dozens of non profit-making clubs have had a discount of between 10pc and 35pc on their rates.
But now rates bills will disappear from the clubs' balance sheets, providing they meet the criteria on the new rates deal, which encourages them to develop their activities.
Scouts and Guide associations will also benefit as their rates relief will increase from 80pc to 100pc.
It is thought about 80 sporting clubs and other organisations will enjoy free or lower rates and the new scheme will cost the council in the region of £45,000.
Happy
The action follows a complete review of the Business Rates Discretionary Rate Relief Scheme which has operated for eight years.
Cllr Bob Howarth, council leader and chairman of the management and finance committee, said he was delighted that the old scheme has been given the red card.
"Local sporting organisations will, I am sure, be happy we have listened to their arguments that they should have more rates relief, " he said.
"We hope that this new scheme will encourage them to become affiliated to sporting governing bodies, as well as promoting the development of youngsters and disadvantaged groups.
It should boost sporting development in the borough - one of the council's priorities," Cllr Howarth added.
