BY Friday afternoon, Liberal chief Jeremy Thorpe could be preparing to move into No. 10, Downing Street. For after Thursday's General Election, the Liberals could be in a position to form the next Government. This was said today by Mr Thorpe, who said that his party's support had increased dramatically during the last few days.

CYRIL Stapleton, the band leader and record producer, died today, aged 60.

50 YEARS AGO

ONLY one member of the Farnworth Borough Council refused, at a special meeting in the Town Hall last night, to support a strong protest to the Minister of Town and Country Planning against the decision of the County Planning Committee to permit the erection of a 100ft. gas holder in the centre of the town. Ald H.G. Holland said the new holder would stand like a sentinel over Central Park and the Civic Centre. Everyone, with the exception of the Kearsley representatives, had agreed it would be bad planning to allow the holder to be built there.

125 YEARS AGO

SHORTLY before ten o'clock this morning, a fire was discovered in the upper-storey of the stable adjoining the house of Dr. Dorian, Blackburn-street. The alarm was given by one of the children, and a message was immediately despatched for the Fire Brigade. In a short time, the brigade belonging to Messrs Ormrod and Hardcastle, in charge of Superintendent Dawson, was upon the spot, and had commenced to play upon the building, from which flames were issuing, when the Corporation brigade arrived. Means were then taken by both Brigades to subdue the fire, which was extinguished in about half an hour. The room was well filled with hay and straw, the greater portion of which is injured with the fire, but fortunately little damage besides has been sustained. The property, we are informed, is insured. It is conjectured that the fire originated by the flue of the kitchen chimney, which passes through the room, becoming overheated.
