A BOLTON motorist claims there IS chaos on a busy commuter route as drivers try to avoid major road works.

Drivers are trying to find a way around the southbound carriageway closure on Blackburn Road pictured this week.

And they are taking a route which is causing massive jams in the Bromley Cross and Bradshaw areas, especially at the Royal Oak junction and all the way down Tonge Moor Road into Bolton town centre.

Mrs Enid Mort, of Bromley Cross Road, says it is taking 50 minutes to travel into Bolton town centre. The BEN reported earlier this week that a diversion which had been set up to direct traffic past the road works along Watersmeeting Road appeared to be working well.

But Mrs Mort said: "It certainly is chaos on the roads. On Tonge Moor Road, all the way down to Folds Road, the traffic is at a standstill."

Leading Tory Cllr John Walsh had predicted chaos and blasted town hall planners for starting the work before nearby work on Moss Bank Way was finished.
