I READ with interest Mrs Ruane's letters regarding the efforts to secure more resources for the Royal Bolton Hospital. Presumably, to lengthen the time-wasting corridors constructed on the incline "to take away the clinical look" according to the Chairman, plus more car parks.

In my recent letter I suggested that the proposed Fun Centre be moved to the present hospital site and a new state-of-the-art hospital built in the town centre. This would be more economic to operate and central for all the areas it has to serve.

However, it has now emerged that the residents of Chorley Street are complaining about the transport arrangements for the proposed Sports Centre on the old Infirmary site.

Surely it would be more sensible if the David Lloyd Group were asked to move their development to the Bolton Hospital site, combine it with the proposed "Fun Centre" and build the new hospital on the former Infirmary site which is like the centre of a spider's web for the areas from which patients will be drawn.

If the hospital is planned on a labour-saving principle, the cash allocations would allow for better salaries to be paid to the hard-working staff.

Please ask the people of Bolton what they prefer - a

fun centre costing the tax payers and Council - charge payers an undisclosed amount; a private sports centre for members only or a modern hospital with the sporting development moved into the more suitable site, close to an existing golf course; better transport facilities with the present Water Place site being converted into a modern bus station. This would remove the dangers of the present transport sites (station and Blackhorse Street).
