JUMBLES Reservoir at Turton, originally estimated at £998,213, is certain to top £1,850,000. The Bolton waterworks engineer, Mr W. Donald Morris, today explained that the grouting and other work had cost more than anticipated. 'It is difficult to envisage all the problems particularly since part of the work is below ground,' he said. 'The type of rock changes a great deal across the line of the embankment. Test boreholes did not disclose all the conditions underground.'

VARIETY at the Grand next week brings a host of acts mostly making their first appearance in the town. Although Scott Sanders is the exception, it is many years since he appeared here in his comedy character portrayals. Leslie Welch, 'The Memory Man', makes a personal appearance with a challenge to you to try to beat him in his replies to any sporting question. The three Lesters portray cyclonic acrobats on the bouncing trampoline, the three Brooklyns are dancers, and Roy Holland, in the character of 'Old Mother Riley', completes the show.

SIR,- I am not against any privileges that may be deemed necessary for the comforts of the fair sex, such as the pavilions set aside for their use in the public park; but I think a little privilege might also be granted to the sterner sex in the shape of a smoking box, in the same grounds, where one might enjoy a soothing pipe of weed in the company of kindred souls.
