Is this Bolton's most improved band?
I first got a demo from this band about twelve months ago, and to be honest I wasn't that impressed. I thought maybe they'd jumped the gun a bit. Twelve months on though and with a load of gigs under their belt, their second release finds its way to me via Max's secret web and I 'm pleased to say its really rather good!
Three very catchy tracks written by lead singer Rachel Appleton, well produced and peformed.
By coincidence I staggered into a local venue a couple of days after getting this tape and caught them live, and I'm happy to report their stage performance is every bit as good.
Rachel really does have a unique voice, which is half the battle in my humble opinion, although I'd still like to hear some more vocals backing her up.
Again on the down side, some of the lyrics are a little twee (stars/Mars rhyme for example) and I still feel they're crying out for a keyboard but all in all it's a very good offering. Comparisons with Catatonia are going to be made (which is a shame) but if they can do it, so can Unique Spirit.
And good luck to them! MAX WILDE
