COUNCIL workers are still battling to clear a huge lake which has appeared in a Bolton park.
And what was thought to be a natural spring may have added to the problems caused by recent heavy rainfall to create the danger in Moss Bank Park.
Local people said water began pooling in a natural dip in the ground last week after a spring was seen bubbling in the hollow.
But the Council's deputy director of leisure John Shepley confirmed to the BEN that "spring" was caused by a blocked culvert which had caused water to gush to the surface and create the lake.
Mr Shepley said: "They have not found a natural spring. The problem has been caused by a blocked culvert which we knew was under there.
"It may have looked to people that it was a spring because water was bubbling up. The problem has simply been caused by the amount of rain that has fallen in recent weeks."
The culvert has now been cleared following excavations by council workmen and water has already begun to drain away.
But efforts to put special land drains in to allow extra water to seep away from the site between the main car park and Moss Lane have been thwarted by bad weather.
Mr Shepley added: "We hoped to only be there for a few days but we're being severely hampered by the weather."
