I THINK the Church's proposal to mark the beginning of the year 2000 (which incidentally is NOT the new millennium) by a distribution of candles to every house in the landshould be shelved.
Apart from the danger of house fires, which could well cause loss of life, it is unlikely that any spiritual good will come from this action. If the money is available for such an undertaking, it seems to me that some specifically uplifting spiritual material would be better distributed.
Perhaps we could also have some decent Book of Common Prayer services at a proper time on Sundays.
