BOLTON councillors are calling on MPs to make sure they have a say over whether fluoride is added to the town's water supply.
They fear that local authorities could be left out of the debate and fluoride could be added without them being consulted.
Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Mrs Barbara Ronson asked councillors to approve the move at a planning and environment committee meeting.
She said: "We are asking MPs, no matter which side of the debate they are on, to repect the rights of local government to represent the views of local people."
Tory deputy leader Cllr John Walsh added: "The key issue is that we do not by default lose the chance of a proper public debate on the issue and the decision is made by someone remote from here."
