I listened to philosophers

Talking far into the night,

They spoke of many grandiose ideals,

And mentioned deprivation

And the need to put things right,

The senseless killings and the wars,

Fought often in the name of Christian laws.

These philosophers were intelligent,

The most sensible of men,

They could see all that was wrong

Appeared incomprehensible to them.

They were earnest in their wishes,

Sincere in their beliefs

They even had a conscience,

But acknowledged

That they looked the other way

On seeing man's inhumanity to men.

What could they do?

It is easier to conform than fight.

It's a type of entertainment

Talking far into the night,

Sitting in an armchair

And putting wrongs to right. By Doris Howarth
