Lancashire Lynx 22 Dewsbury 12

STEVE Hampson walked away from Victory Park with a big grin on his face after watching his injury-hit side dominate the second half in atrocious conditions.

Hampson was over the moon with his side's dogged determination and although he gave credit to a good all-round performance, he singled out his forwards for a gritty display.

For the statisticians, Hambro reckoned his side had a 91 per cent completion rate in the second half, which meant that Lynx completed 21 of their 23 plays.

Disappointed in their last two outings away from home, Lynx seemed to benefit from the break they had last weekend, having been knocked out of the cup by Whitehaven.

Lynx started brightly with scrum half Flanagan kicking an early drop goal after good pressure early on.

Phil Jones grabbed a try on nine minutes and successfully converted to give Lynx a flying start at 7-0.

Such was the home side's start, Dewsbury hardly got out of their own half in the first ten minutes.

Stand off Phil Jones and Neil Flannagan were, along with full back Doc Murray, enjoying a huge amount of possession (pictured).

No 10 Kyle White, still struggling for full fitness, proved a handful and with Walsh, Norton, Gee and ex-Wigan squad player Ian Gildart provided a battering ram up the middle.

Lynx gained another penalty minutes later and looked as though they would cruise through the game.

Indiscipline then raised its head and Dewsbury clawed their way back into the game.

Penalty after penalty were given away and soon Lynx had lost their way.

Dewsbury scored from two penalties and a try from winger Adrian Flynn put them close as they came towards the break.

Just before the hooter, on-loan Bradford Bulls star Paul Medley hit the ball at pace from a superbly laid on pass and looked for all the world as though he would put Dewsbury in the lead. However, after 30 yards he appeared to go into reverse and the Lynx defence were on him in a flash.

Whatever Hampson had said at half-time obviously worked because Lynx came out firing on all cylinders.

Flanagan again hit a drop goal early on to maintain the advantage. Murray diffused a huge bomb under the sticks from Dewsbury and launched an attack up field.

However, a knock-on on the Lynx 2- sparked a mass brawl which involved both sides.

Murray was given ten minutes along with the Dewsbury hooker Paul Delaney whose side gained a penalty.

Scoring that and yet another for a swinging arm, Dewsbury took the lead 12 points to 10.

Then when Dewsbury seemed to be getting the upper hand Phil Jones took a quick tap penalty and raced under the Dewsbury post to score a cracking try followed by an easy conversion.

The home side went into overdrive now and launched attack after attack.

The final blow was a try from a tap penalty taken by Joe Walsh on the Dewsbury line.

Man of the match went deservedly to stand off Phil Jones.

The next game for Lynx is away at Whitehaven Warriors on March 17, kick-off 7.30.
