A COUNCILLOR is threatening to take legal action against Greater Manchester's Chief Constable David Wilmot . . . for the cost of a front door.

Labour Cllr Paul Fitzpatrick was furious when a door of a property he owns was broken down during a police raid.

He rents out the house on St Helens Road and he claims the police raided the property on suspicion that a drug dealer was living there.

He says that there were no arrests and nobody was charged. But he was left with a bill of more than £250 to repair the door.

He said: "I can't accept that the police can just come along and break a door down and then not meet the cost of repair when they realise they have the wrong house.

"It surely isn't fair to expect the owner to pay for it.

"I have written to the police claiming the cost, but they have written back saying they are not prepared to pay.

"It has left me with no choice but to write to the Chief Constable."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We are aware of the incident Mr Fitzpatrick is referring to and it is intimated that he will take proceedings against the Chief Constable to recover the cost of the damage.

"It is inappropriate for us to comment further."
