As national Convention Officer for Lions Clubs International, I was dismayed to read the article in the BEN (March 1), where Council Chiefs have agreed to cut street cleaning in the town centre in the late afternoon to save £20,000, and additional cut-backs in the worst areas to save another £20,000. Having just successfully promoted Bolton as the venue for our national Convention in the year 2000, I cringe to think what impression our visitors from all over the UK and Ireland will take away with them. The enthusiasm of those in promoting Bolton as a Tourist, Shopping and Convention Centre and their undoubted success, will all be swept away, but not with the litter! Our town should be a pride to us all at any time of the day or night, any day of the week. Please think again, Bolton Council, and do remember that visitors to the town do need to attend to Nature's needs 24 hours a day.
