RESIDENTS and councillors of a Chorley village are calling for their housing estate to be spruced up and made safer for children before it's too late.

The Mendip Road estate in Clayton-le-Woods needs urgent attention according to Liberal Democrat councillors, as a fence near to a brook has been broken for many months and road signs are in a poor condition.

But now, residents together with local activist and former councillor for the area, Mrs Gail Ormston, has taken up the issue by writing to Chorley Borough Council and North West Water in a bid to get the repairs done. Mrs Ormston, said: "The broken fence near to the brook is a potential hazard to children - they could be tempted to get through it and play around in the stream. As a mother of a young child, I think something needs to be done.

"The Mendip Road Estate also needs sprucing up too. The broken fence looks bad, and there are several damaged street signs which need to be fixed."

Mrs Ormston has written to North West Water bosses and well as Chorley Council urging action to deal with these issues.

She added: "Collingwood Housing Association, which owns the homes at Mendip Road, are providing play equipment for children on the estate. This is very welcome.

"Seeing these positive moves, it is essential for any negative images to be dealt with."

Chorley Borough Council's chief engineer Alex Choraffa said: "We will be glad to look into the matter and deal with any specific problems that are in our remit."

North West Water is looking into whether the estate falls under its jurisdiction.
