ALL-in-all, it's just a-nother brick in the wall.

These immortal lyrics from Pink Floyd's most famous song 'The Wall' have stood the test of time.

Just like the 20ft-high daubing on Denham Quarry (pictured) - which look set to stay there for some time longer with the help of Groundwork Wigan and Chorley!

For Groundwork volunteers are the now the official environmental custodians of the quarry. And their first task is to clean off all the graffiti which has been daubed on the rock face, giving the Pink Floyd landmark pride of place.

Lindsey Williamson, project worker at Groundwork, said: "Apparently, the Pink Floyd slogan has been there for 15 years, and it has now become synonymous with the quarry after all this time.

"Before starting our clean up work at Denham, we consulted with outdoor groups such as rock climbers, who use the quarry, about what they thought.

"And, not surprisingly, they suggested keeping it."

Some local climbers who use Denham Quarry have even named climbs 'The Wall' - a fitting tribute to the band as well as the quarry.

Lindsey added: "We are getting rid of the rest of the graffiti as some of it is obscene, but keeping The Wall slogan is something which is important to the area. After all, it's a local landmark isn't it?"

Julie Maund, assistant project officer at Groundwork commented: "It's important to Groundwork to keep the history of the area. That's the reason why we wanted to keep it up there."

The Groundwork team will get cracking cleaning up the place in the summer. They have plans to resurface the car park and footpaths and also make an ecological survey of the pond.
