WE are writing to express our concern at the proposed plans for the Octagon Theatre, Bolton.

We write as a national touring drama company with 15 years experience.

Based in the North West, we are very familiar with the Octagon Theatre and its standing.

Above all the Octagon has worked to promote theatre which is relevant to its particular constituency, and has done so with outstanding success over the past eight years under the Artistic Directorship of Lawrence Till.

The work has been both challenging and accessible and of a consistently high standard and has won the theatre a loyal local audience.

In our experience it would be impossible for a national touring company like ourselves to provide theatre with the same resonance for the people of Bolton than a producing house which is in tune with its community.

With the refurbishment of Manchester's Contact Thea

tre which will take in touring productions and the imminent completion of the Lowry Centre in Salford (right on Bolton's doorste;), the North-west is amply served with receiving venues.

It is our view that the proposed plan of action smacks of panic and is an ill thought through short term measure which will provide long term damage to the artistic life of Bolton.

We urge you to bring this matter to the attention of the people of Bolton.
