A MAN viciously attacked a father and son with a baton after a road rage incident in Farnworth. The 47-year-old victim suffered a severe head wound and his 23-year-old son a broken jaw in the attack as other motorists watched helplessly.

The attacker then jumped into his car - with a young boy, aged about six, sitting in the front passenger seat - and sped away .

Detectives investigating the incident are urging the man to contact them before they track him down.

It happened in Park Street, Farnworth, near the junction with Rawson Street, at 11am on Saturday.

Police said after a driving disagreement with the man, the father and son got out of their car.

There was a brief argument after which the man returned to his car.

But instead of getting inside he produced a weapon, believed to be a baton, and attacked the other two men.

Another motorist used his mobile phone to call the police.

The man police are hunting drove away from the scene in a dark blue VW Polo or Golf car.

He is white, aged about 30, stocky build, 5ft 6ins tall with a skinhead haircut.

A boy, believed to be his own son, aged about six, was in the front passenger seat.

Det Sgt Ian Paterson, of Bolton Police, said: "It was a vicious attack and we urgentl;y need to talk to the other man involved.

"If he believes he has a different version of events to tell us I would urge him to get in touch with us now before we knock on his door."
