BURY and Bolton Chamber will not be standing still as it reflects on a year of "considerable progress." It has set itself a clutch of future challenges to ensure it continues to deliver a wide and varied range of services to businesses and partners. The upbeat appraisal came at the Chamber's annual public meeting at its Link House headquarters in Bury.

More than 30 people attended Friday's event which was addressed by Chamber chairman Tony Rink and chief executive Richard Bindless.

In his speech, Mr Rink explained the role and remit of the organisation.

Reflecting on the last 12 months, he told the audience: "Last year was one of considerable progress."

Mr Rink also spoke about the long-term implications of last October's merger between Bolton Bury TEC and Bolton and Bury Chamber of Commerce which had created the new Chamber.

He said the amalgamation would usher in changes "which will become evident during the next 12 months.

"But we will continue our role of delivering Government contracts for training and workforce development."

Commenting on the new regional development agencies, the chairman added: "No-one knows how they will work out, but they will certainly have our full support."

Mr Richard Bindless underlined Chamber achievements for last year and also focused on targets for the coming 12 months.

He said: "We are doing a profoundly important job."

However, on a note of caution, the chief executive warned: "We will have to tighten our portfolio of activities."

Mr Bindless revealed the Chamber's challenges for the future. These are: -

Simple and strong business support

Clear strong voice

Stronger customer focus

Maximise flexibility of provision

Contined high quality

Support basic skills.
