COLIN Todd was back to square one in his search for midfield cover today after ruling out a move for Spaniard Francesco Pirri.
The former Atletico Madrid player, currently playing Second Division football with Merida, has spent the last two days' training with Wanderers but will not be offered the loan deal that was lined up when he arrived at the weekend.
"The player's fitness levels weren't high enough," the Reebok boss explained. "He hasn't been playing games and it shows. With nine crucial games to be played I didn't think it was the right option to take."
Todd is still aiming to have a new midfielder on board before tomorrow's 5 o'clock transfer deadline but time is running out.
Wanderers could also be fighting a losing battle in their bid to sign Blackpool goalkeeper Steve Banks. Seasiders boss Nigel Worthington, who is determined to steer his club clear of the Second Division relegation zone, wants a replacement on board before he allows his No 1 to leave Bloomfield Road.
Greg Strong, who has made nine senior appearances for Wanderers this season, is joining Stoke City on a month's loan. He could stay to the end of the season if Todd doesn't need him as cover.
