A NEW boss has taken over in the local Employment Service.
Mr Steve Brown, pictured, has been appointed District Manager in charge of Bolton and Bury.
A recent re-organisation means the Bolton-based job now covers Bury as well.
Mr Brown, aged 49, who is based in Blackhorse Street, is responsible for eight Jobcentres - Bolton (two), Farnworth, Westhoughton, Horwich, Bury, Prestwich and Radcliffe.
There is a total staff of about 170.
Originally from Dukinfield, Mr Brown has lived in Astley Bridge since his marriage 30 years ago.
He has worked for the Employment Service for 33 years - most recently in a senior management role at the North-west office in Salford Quays.
While he was there he was responsible for issues such as the New Deal - an important initiative in Bolton and Bury.
He is looking forward to working with partner organisations and the wider community in both towns.
The introduction of the minimum wage on April 1 is another important development.
Mr Brown is not expecting problems when the £3.60 an hour rate becomes law.
"Early indications from the employers we have spoken to are that they have a good understanding of the implications of the legislation and the rates of pay they will be required to meet," he said.
"Most firms will be able to comply with the legislation."
Mr Brown's predecessor, Mr Steve Johnson, is temporarily on secondment with Preston-based Lancashire Enterprises before taking up another operational post with the regional Employment Service.
