TWO local students with dreams of becoming Bolton's answer to Linford Christie and David Beckham need a helping hand to kick off their sporting careers.
The two Thornleigh pupils have been chosen to represent Britain at the International student games in Portugal this summer.
Ashley Whiting has been picked for the British football team and fellow 17-year-old Ben Caldwell was chosen to represent his country on the athletics track.
But the boys fear their ambitions to become professional sportsmen could fall at the first hurdle - because they cannot afford to go.
PE teacher Helen Grundy said: "The time, energy and dedication to sport displayed by both students is a credit to themselves, their families, teachers and coaches.
"Both boys are hoping that local companies may wish to sponsor them or provide some financial assistance towards the cost, which will be about £550 per student."
Anyone who can help can contact Mrs Grundy at Thornleigh on Bolton 301351.
