BOLTON'S five-months-old teachers' dispute is over after teachers accepted an offer of more available staff. The dispute began over what the teachers felt was inadequate planning for the raising of the school-leaving age, which came into force last September. They protested about overcrowding and alleged understaffing, and refused to teach in unsatisfactory working conditions; to take lessons in the absence of other staff members; to set or mark homework in their own time, or to take part in any extra-mural activities. The action spread to 17 schools in the area.

SIR,- We see group photographs in the 'Evening News' from time to time, and we do get some very nice ones, but when do we see anyone with a smile on his face. It is so depressing to see everyone with long faces. We might be passing through the darkest days of the war.

I send Bolton papers overseas every week, and I am sure these group photographs cause our friends or relations to wonder whether we are having the good time the Government would like us to believe.

Earlier this year I went to have my photograph taken. Just before the camera clicked the photographer said, 'Try and smile'. It used to be an order, 'Smile please.' Of course, there are faces and faces, but I didn't think mine was as bad as all that.' Yours etc., Perfect, Farnworth.

CHANG Chang, a Celestial, has had to answer at Westminster police court for a very un-English way of using his knife. A fellow-lodger interfered with his marital recreation of assaulting Mrs Chang, when the Celestial rushed at and struck his knife into the mediator's forehead. The latter had to spend six weeks in hospital , and on coming out one of the first men he met was Chang, who bolted at the sight of him. He was remanded, and the magistrate now remanded him.
