THERE appears to be something of a resurgence in live entertainment in Bolton, writes Alan Calvert.

I had two splendid nights out at the end of last week and did not miss the old telly one bit.

The Laughingas Comedy Club got underway at The Place in Ash Street and looks likely to be a Thursday night "must" for many after an impressive opening night bill which included Bolton "stars" Peter Kay and Hovis Presley.

Bob Williamson, a successful comic from another era, was one of the organisers and can be pleased with the way it all went.

The following night saw me enjoying the music and chat of trumpet legend Kenny Baker in the company of about 300 other jazz fans in the Derby Ward Labour Club.

Jeriatric Jazz, the popular local combo, seem to have established a successful formula which involves them sharing the evening with star names.

Drummer Fred Shawcross, who writes the Evening News' jazz column on alternative Saturdays, announced that the next event would probably be this summer.

Roy Williams and Tommy Whittle - a big hit when they appeared in December - are set for a return.
