BEING abandoned on a tropical island wouldn't make Britain's teenagers any less vain!

For a mirror is the luxury item 54 per cent of teens would want to have with them if they were stranded on a desert island, while 57 per cent would take a copy of the bible as their reading material. Those are just some of the findings from a new survey by a major soft drink manufacturer.

Meanwhile, to keep the wild animals away at night, youngsters would turn the stereo up and play the latest hits by chart band Steps.

More of the 13-18 year olds questioned would miss their favourite soap opera more than their family.

The Citizen sent reporter Steve Dunthorne and photographer Simon Bolton onto the streets of Chorley to find out just what you would want if you were shipwrecked - and what music you would play to keep the night time nasties at bay?

Darren Adams, 18, of Coppull, had no problem in deciding exactly what could keep him entertained while waiting to be rescued.

"All I'd need to take are telly and a nice tall blonde," he said.

He would play music by teenage chart band Hepburn to keep the animals out of sight.

Darren's friend Mark Rawlinson also has a simple solution to killing the time waiting for the rescuers.

He said: "I'd take my guitar and sit under a palm tree playing it."

Musically, he things former corrie star Adam Rickett or Swedish boy band A1 would be just the tickets for keeping animals away.

John Hart, 18, of Chorley, also knows exactly how he would want to pass the time.

"I'd want a leggy blonde and a lot of beer - I'd have a great time!" he said.

"I'd scare the animals by playing music by Gecko - my mate's band!"

Stephanie Howard, 18, of Chorley couldn't quite decide on what luxury she wanted.

She said: "I'd want to take a CD player, my CD collection and a load of batteries, but I also want to take Alan, the Big Issue seller."

John Wilson, 34, of Preston would also want a bit of music to keep him happy on his deserted island.

He said: "I'd want to take my music system with me."

That would be useful for playing tracks by the Spice Girls - which John thinks would keep the animals at bay!

Rachel Seddon of Euxton would still want to look good even if she was in the middle of nowhere.

She told us: "I couldn't do without my make-up bag. I'd want to play dance music to keep the animals away - but only because that's the kind of music I like."
