THERE are a number of issues which I feel must be addressed in your article: Bus priority lane a danger to drivers (Bolton Evening News August 17).
In the article Mr Pollitt describes the bus lane on Deane Road, Bolton as an "accident waiting to happen". GMPTE worked closely with Bolton MBC on the development of this new facility which was only introduced after extensive consultation in the local area. As would be the case for any new road layout we would advise all motorists to use the same sort of care and attention that they would when encountering any new traffic arrangements.
We have made proper provisions to ensure that car drivers in the traffic bays have enough space to safely manoeuvre in and out of their vehicle and this is within standard regulations. Of course, it is still necessary for people parked in the bays to check for the presence of buses in the bus lane before they step out of their car. This situation should not present any additional safety problems over and above those that would have to be taken into account for a driver parked either in a normal lay-by or alongside a kerb.
Mr Pollitt also says that the bus lane is "unnecessary". We believe that it is necessary in order to ease congestion and provide an efficient, effective alternative to the car in an area which your reporter describes as being "choked with traffic".
Bus lanes form an integral part of a number of measures which provide a visible statement that buses are being given priority. We hope that when people see the way in which the progress of the bus through the traffic is improved by the bus lanes, they will be encouraged to choose bus travel as an alternative to their private cars.
We believe that bus lanes offer a real opportunity to improve bus travel for passengers in Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority and GMPTE are working with local transport operators and local authorities to deliver the highest quality public transport facilities possible. We will continue to make improvements to the existing network and work towards providing a fully integrated, accessible and safe alternative to the car.
